Located just South of Hartley Bay, Cetacea Lab specializes in acoustic study and whale research in one of the most remote outposts on the BC Coast. Nestled on the Southern tip of Gill Island in the traditional territory of the Gitga’at Nation, the lab is home to lead researcher Hermann Meuter, a German transplant and true whale aficionado.
Throughout the summer season, Cetacea Lab plays host to a number of student researchers who assist Meuter in monitoring Humpback, Fin and Orca Whales. The acoustic monitoring network laid on the sea bottom provide great insight into whale communication and the effect of acoustic noise on their behaviour.
Cetacea Lab, in partnership with the Gitga’at, is leading the way in whale research in the Northern Great Bear.
